A major Conference discussing what is needed to address poverty levels in Northern Ireland and to reject what is contained in the draft Anti-Poverty Strategy was held in the Dunadry Hotel on 2nd September.

Siobhán worked with Trussell, Barnardos NI, the NI Anti-Poverty Network and a range of other organisations to organise this Conference.  Rachel Benson from Atlas Women’s Centre took part in the lived experience panel at the Conference which was really powerful and really highlighted the impact of poverty on people’s lives.  It was clear from this panel and the many other contributions at the Conference just how much work is needed to address poverty in Northern Ireland.

As part of the Conference Siobhán worked with Kellie Turtle from UNISON, Alex Brennan from the NI Women’s Budget Group, Becca Bor from the NI Anti-Poverty Network and Meg Stith from Barnardos NI to highlight the poverty that those providing care face.  This included childcare and unpaid care for sick and disabled family members.  Siobhán used Women’s Regional Consortium research and evidence from a joint research paper with Carers NI to input into this workshop.
