As part of a doctoral research project, Kate Mukungu carried out 10 life history interviews with activists from NI that have taken a stance on VAWG – violence against women and girls. These 2016 interviews were part of a study across two sites, Namibia and Northern Ireland, which sought to understand how women activists develop relations across division in post-conflict societies.  Now the study is concluded, Kate will deliver a feedback session on three key themes that emerged in the study.  These are:

  • the lingering challenges of addressing gendered violence by conflict actors within communities
  • the immediate and long-term benefits of women of different ages carrying out activism together
  • the power of solidarity in activism relationships and the strategies women use to keep activism progressing when solidarity is under strain
